Autotheorie Fictions for Artists - Lauren Fournier

16 - 18.09.2022

Writing Workshop
with Lauren Fournier

Schloss/castello Gandegg
Pigenoer Weg/Via Piganó 19
39057 Eppan/Appiano

In this workshop, writer and curator Lauren Fournier (she/her) will lead participants in experimenting with different genres and forms of autotheoryfictions in their practices. Autotheoryfiction describes the commingling of autobiography or memoir, theory or philosophy, and fictionalization to varying degrees and effects. The workshop will include reading and discussing short texts together, engaging in writing exercises in response to prompts, and exploring modes of processing their stories and ideas.

For the fall 2022, Lauren is in residence at Eau&Gaz. Her first book Autotheory as Feminist Practice in Art, Writing, and Criticism (The MIT Press, 2021) has been reviewed and featured in such venues as Art in America, Hyperallergic, Columbia Journal of Literary Criticism, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. She is now writing her second book on the topic, Autotheoryfictions in the Twenty-First Century, in which she reads pressing social issues, current events, and debates through ideas of auto, theory, and fiction. A curator too, she is the director/founder of the ongoing, site-responsive curatorial platform Fermenting Feminism, and has won international curatorial awards. Her curatorial programs and editorial offshoots, including the artist’s book Critical Booch (2019), has been featured in venues like The New York Times.

The number of participants is limited to eight. Cost 170 euros including lunch. 30 % student discount.

There is the possibility to stay overnight in the residence. Just contact us and reserve a place!

No?

Hello it’s me - Nadja Abt

29.04 - 01.05.2022

Writing Workshop
with Nadja Abt

Eau&Gaz Residency
Plazerstrasse 17
39057 Eppan/Appiano

Join us for an intensive writing workshop with the artist and author Nadja Abt. Three days long, we will explore the current trend of first-person narration and the possibilities of autofictional in collective writings.

In recent years, there has been a real boom in autofictional writing, or a trend to call literature autofiction. In terms of content, these books often refer to the visual arts, or their authors come from the art world. Why female* authors in particular are associated with this genre and why the trend is moving further and further towards first-person narration is one part we will explore. The second part of the workshop will be a collective writing process, using different steps, which will release our own blockades and test new narrative structures, similar to the so-called Writers` Room in the film business. With literature by Moyra Davey, Marguerite Duras, Ben Lerner, Deborah Levy, Eileen Myles and many more.

Texts for preparation will be provided before the workshop. The course will be mainly in German, with some texts given out in English. During the days in Eppan, you may also write in English. During the three days in Eppan, the workshop will focus on the connection between literature and visual arts with readings and discussions. The workshop will be moderated by Nadja.

Please enroll until beginning of April. We will provide you with a reader ten days before the workshop starts. There are possibilities to spend the night in the residence. Just write to us if you would like to reserve a room!

The number of participants is limited to eight. Cost 170 euros including lunch. 30 % student discount.

There is the possibility to stay overnight in the residence. Just contact us and reserve a place!

Metabolic Art Criticism - Rosalyn D'Mello

11.-13 June 2021

Writing Workshop
with Rosalyn D’Mello

Angerburg Blumenhotel
Unteralberstraße/Via dell’Olmo 16
39057 Eppan/Appiano, Italy

The course Metabolic Art Criticism attests to and celebrates the empowering potential of a genre of art criticism that embraces the centrality of the self as receiver and synthesiser of the diverse external stimuli that infuse the context within which art is conceived of, produced, exhibited and critiqued. It is rooted in the rigorous practice of continually examining our consciousness as a way of presencing our emotional response to art, thus revealing our individual subjective biases and tendencies. For instance, what compels us to be drawn to or moved by some art, what drives our repulsion towards others? What is the role of patriarchal, capitalist and race-based conditioning in unwittingly determining mainstream aesthetics, inevitably informing our gaze.

Through carefully selected readings and exercises, we will examine the intersecting political structures that frame how we see what we see, if and when we see; thus better understanding what occasions our witness by interrogating and challenging prevailing norms about what is validly considered art; who is allowed to be an artist, and our agency, as art critics, in shaping these questions.

By reading together, eating communally, and privileging our multiple subjectivities through carefully designed exercises, this course will help participants to better situate their ‚gaze‘, thus enabling them to generate art criticism through the locus of the self and its relational ecologies.
